How to Finish a Creative Project When You're Stuck in the Middle
Posted by Megan Petersen on
Finishing a creative project can be one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences for any maker or artist. It's easy to get excited about a new idea and dive in headfirst, but when you hit that inevitable roadblock somewhere in the middle, it can feel like the project will never see the light of day.
But I'm here to tell you that you have the power to push through and complete even your most ambitious creative undertakings. It's all about tapping into your passion, breaking down the process, taking a rest, but ultimately refusing to give up.
Start with recalling why you started this project in the first place. What was it about this idea that ignited that creative fire within you? Hold onto that passion and let it fuel you, even when the going gets tough. Sometime it helps me to journal about my initial inspiration and long-term goals to get re-set and re-motivated. It can help you to reconnect with the initial excitement and inspiration that drove you to begin.
Next, take a step back and objectively assess where you're at. You might be closer to the finish line than you think!
Break the project down into smaller, more manageable tasks and create a plan to tackle them one by one. I can't tell you the number of times I've felt overwhelmed with an idea to the point of letting it paralyze me. But then, when I take the time to map out all of the actions steps it would take to get me from idea to completion, I realize the actual doing isn't actually the hardest part. Having a roadmap to follow is like a shortcut to accessing a state of creative flow!
Then I would encourage you to celebrate each milestone as you reach it, no matter how small - those little wins will keep you motivated to reach the finish line.
And when self-doubt starts to creep in, remember that every creative has been exactly where you are now. The ability to push past the challenges and see a project through to the end is what separates the dreamers from the doers.
You've got this!
So channel that passion, create a roadmap, and most importantly, refuse to give up on your creative urges. The world is waiting to see what you'll create.
